Bath Area Family YMCA YCare at the Dike/Newell School Earns After School Association Accreditation!

The National AfterSchool Association (NAA) announced Feb. 5, 2007 that the Bath Area Family YMCA Y Care Program at the Dike/Newell School has been awarded National Accreditation status.
"National Accreditation is not an easy designation to achieve,” according to Peter Howe, NAA Chief Operating Officer. “The staff, parents, school and children must all work together to meet the 144 standards included in the NAA Standards for Quality School-Age Care. Accreditation indicates a long-term commitment to quality, a professionally managed program that is safe and effective, along with a genuine dedication to children and their families,” said Howe.
NAA Board President Judy Nee explained, "Accreditation is the trend in many areas of children’s programming and education—childcare, schools, camps, and special interest activities. NAA has been promoting quality since its inception in 1987, but the Accreditation process (launched in 1998) gives programs a way to show, in measurable terms, they are a cut above the rest.”
Y Care Assistant Childcare Director, Amy Carmichael highlighted the collaboration between the national organization, the program staff, families, and Bath Public Schools as an essential element in achieving Accreditation. “This is a team effort; quality is not something you can create without the children, families, schools and staff in your program, it needs active input and support, the kind you can get only from people who believe in your mission and believe in doing the best thing for the youth in this community” Carmichael shared.

The Y Care Programs started in 1997 by the Bath Area Family YMCA in collaboration with the Bath Public School and Union 47 School Departments.  There are 6 Y Care Before and Afterschool programs in the area.  They are located in the following schools:  Dike/Newell Elementary School, Fisher/Mitchell Elementary School, West Bath Elementary, Phippsburg Elementary, Georgetown Central School, and Woolwich Central School.  The programs serve K-6th graders.  The program operates throughout the school year, including school vacations and teacher workdays.  For more information, please contact Amy Carmichael at (207) 443-4112 extension 17 or go to www.bathymca.org.

The Y Care Program at the Dike/Newell School in Bath, ME is the first program to receive NAA  Accreditation in the Midcoast Region and is one of only 7 before and afterschool programs Accredited in the state of Maine.  The Bath Area Family YMCA is the first YMCA in Maine to receive the NAA accreditation endorsement for an afterschool program.  The Y Care Program Staff at the Dike Newell School include:  Site Director, Diana Tardiff; Group Leader, Jackie Casseras; Group Leader, Margaret Gabelmann; and Group Leader Taffy Dufour.

The National AfterSchool Association, formerly the National School-Age Care Alliance, was founded in 1987. NAA is a professional association with a membership component, which includes more than 10,000 practitioners, policy makers, and administrators representing all public, private, and community-based sectors of afterschool programs, as well as school-age and afterschool programs on military bases, both domestic and international. As the leading voice of the afterschool profession, NAA is dedicated to the development, education, and care of children and youth during their out-of-school hours. More information about the organization can be found at www.naaweb.org.
