Gettysburg Monday April 18, 2008
We talked about leadership at Gettysburg today?
“I thought today would be just another history lecture but I was mistaken. Yes it was about history but I learned so much more than that. What I walked away with is that when we all work together as one anything can be accomplished. When the soldiers worked together they won. To be a leader you have to be calm, cool and organized. Someone who can bring greatness to everyone to fight and never give up.”
“to have a team that works you have to have a leader who can lead or you just have chaos”
“That you can’t beat a team or any army by your self and everybody makes mistakes”
“If you can believe it you can do it”
“being a leader means you have to make decisions for everyone that follows you, you can make ones or bad ones”
“leadership is a big help to get more ideas ion how to get work done faster on in a better way”
“teamwork gets a lot done faster. You can depend on other people and they can depend on you”
“when you are a leader your decisions affect everyone around you and not just you”
We asked the kids what made Chamberlain such a great leader?
“ He was a
great leader because he never gave up. He fought with everything he had. He
organized and contemplated everything. He didn’t let anyone over come him”
“he was very strong emotionally and physically. Even though he had been shot six
times he did not pull out of his leader position”
“he thought teamwork was important and used it. He thought of others before himself”
“he was able to make good decisions quickly”
“he had strategies and was good at explaining how things are going to work”
We
talked about being a leader and how it felt.
“I was a
leader at the school many times in the play.
“I had to help and girl on a basketball team. It felt good that I could do my best to help make her fit in and have fun”
“I was in charge of a craft group at my campground. It was hard because I had to do a lot and there was way too much going on”
“I have been a leader a lot of times. It felt like I was in charge and other people’s opinion mattered, but I didn’t have to agree with them”
“I was a leader for soccer. I felt special for a moment but that passed and also felt like you didn’t want to disappoint your teammates”
“I am usually leader anytime that I’m with my friends and we are playing a game outside. It is fun and my friends don’t always mind because I listen to them and let them lead at some point”
“I am a good leader for myself and I feel good because I like to take on things by myself and not someone else”
We asked .. Have you ever had to follow when you did not believe in your leaders mission?
“Yes…I was on a b-ball team last year and my coach told our team that it was all about winning and I didn’t agree”
“Yes, especially in sports. The captain (leader) tells you that to do and it messes things up”
“Depending on how seriously I disagreed with the leader I might just go with it or I might suggest we try something else”
“No, not really. I don’t really like to follow people. I make my own choices therefore making my own mistakes enabling me to learn from them easier”
