YMCA Youth Sports Philosophy

All Bath Area YMCA Youth Sports Programs are designed to build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities. We build strong kids and strong families by showing respect, caring, honesty, and responsibility for teammates, opponents, coaches, officials, and fans. The purpose of YMCA youth sports is to provide a wholesome environment where youngsters are given the opportunity to build self esteem, develop assets that assist in teaching communication, learn the importance of staying fit, enhance their leadership skills, and have FUN. It is the goal of the YMCA to provide youth sports programs that furnish participants with sport specific skills and values that are useful on the court, playing field, gym, pool, or in relationships with family and friends.

Asset Building

Youth asset development is providing youth with the positive experiences, opportunities, and personal qualities that they need to become responsible, successful and caring. Research has shown that, as the number of assets increases in a young person's life, school success and service to community also increase, while negative behaviors decrease. Our Competitive Swimming Program is proud of its role in the asset development experienced by participants.

Parents

Be supportive of your child. YMCA youth sports are a chance for your child to grow and develop in a safe, fun environment. Cheer and encourage all swimmers, and above all be positive. Model good sportsmanship. Officials and coaches are trying to provide a positive and enjoyable competitive experience for all athletes. Youth sports at the Y are for the kids. Let them practice, compete, have fun, and make mistakes and don’t put pressure on them to be the next Jenny Thompson or Ian Crocker.

Registration

All new swimmers need to be screened by the coaching staff before joining the team. Once approved by the coaching staff, registration is done at the front desk before each child begins participation. We need a new registration form with parents’ signature each season for every swimmer.

Swim Team Policy Information

YMCA Membership

National YMCA rules of competitive swimming require that each member of every YMCA swim team have an annual (year long) membership in good standing. It is possible to use the monthly eft for the membership fee, but the membership must be maintained for 12 months.

Y Program Refund Policy

Department directors process all credits and refunds. These are done on an individual basis, less the processing and administration fees. Refunds may take up to four weeks. Special consideration will be given for extenuating circumstances.

Weather Cancellations

Practice is only cancelled if the YMCA closes early. Use your own discretion and comfort level when deciding whether or not to come for practice during inclement weather. Cancellation announcements are made on WCSH TV channel 6 and WGME TV cannel 13. When in doubt, call ahead.

Swimmer Responsibilities

Being a part of the team means that you have accepted the responsibilities that come with membership. The minimum each swimmer is expected to contribute:

• All paperwork and fees are completed at the beginning of the season.

• Swimmers must attend as many practices as possible.

• Swimmers must make themselves available for at least 3 YMCA dual meets during the season.

• Swimmers must plan on being available to attend the YMCA State Championship Meet.

• Participation in the team’s annual fundraiser, the Aquathon.

• Swimmers should demonstrate good sportsmanship and respect for others.

• Follow all YMCA building rules and be a respectful guest at other facilities.

Team Suits

Team swimming suits are not required but are encouraged. Suits are sized and ordered in late October or early November. Cost estimates are $25.00 for male suits and $45.00 for female suits. Caps and goggles are also recommended and are for sale ($5, $7) in the pool area by the Aquatics Director or Swim Coach.

Transportation

The team provides buses to all away dual meets. However, transportation is not provided to USA meets or any of the championship meets at the end of the season. If transportation is an issue, let the coach know as soon as possible.

Other? Cancellations

In the event that the YMCA is open but the pool is unusable, we will make every reasonable attempt to contact you to let you know.

Long Reach Swim Club 2006-2007 Fall-Spring Season

The Winter season of LRSC begins September 17th and ends in March.

Competitive strokes, endurance, fun, and related skills are the focus of our very successful swim team. State champions in 19 of the last 20 seasons, winning is a by-product of our philosophy and approach, not a goal in itself. LRSC strives to offer a fun, learning experience where swimmers will thrive. An informal Try-out is mandatory for new or interested swimmers  before acceptance onto the swim team. This ensures that each new participant has the fundamental skills required for a happy, successful experience. The asset approach to healthy youth development is just one of the tools used in this program to help young people further their personal development. A high number (25) of assets from the asset framework are addressed by participation on our team. The team competes in both YMCA and USA Swim Leagues. The coach determines which practice group a swimmer belongs in. Swimmers involved in a Fall sport are encouraged to try-out or sign-up in September to ensure their spot on the team is held for them. Contact Jay Morissette to make an appointment for an individual try-out or if you want more information about competitive swimming at the Bath YMCA. The team is divided into four practice groups.

Practice groups A and B scheduled to meet between 5 and 6 hours a week.  Practice groups C and D scheduled to meet between 1.5 and 2.5 hours a week.
