Q.  Why gymnastics?

A. Few sports provide the variety of benefits that gymnastics does. Strength and flexibility are physical attributes that are beneficial in all sports. From enhanced performance to injury prevention, the benefits of gymnastics are numerous. Gymnastics is often a cross training sport for martial arts, swimming, diving, dance, and more. The discipline, self-confidence, individual responsibility, and sense of teamwork learned are positive attributes in an endeavor and will last a lifetime.  (From monarchsgym.com)  Additional information can be found at: http://www.flipcitygym.com/benefits.htm

Q.  What class should my child sign up for?

A. Please feel free to consult with a gymnastics instructor if you have any questions about your child’s placement?

Q.  What should my child wear to gymnastics?

A. Boys need to wear well fitting t-shirt and shorts.  Girls can wear well fitting t-shirt and shorts, a leotard, or a bathing suit.  Please keep in mind that anything too baggy will be obstructive and possibly dangerous.  This also includes skirts, even the kind sewn to leotards, and footed tights.
Children’s hair should be pulled away from the face, and long ponytails can be difficult to do rolls with.  It’s a better choice to have hair well secured above the shoulder blades.  Jewelry should be removed.

Q.  What is the progression of classes?

A. Children generally begin involvement in the sport in either a preschool or youth class.  Often, preschoolers, as they get older, move to a youth class.  Pre-team and competitive team are the next steps.  The tumbling class is appropriate for participants in the youth and pre-team class, and also for cheerleaders of any level.

Q.  How long will my child stay with a certain class?

A. Children progress to different levels based on their skill achievement and personal characteristics including maturity and desire to improve in gymnastics.  Very few children move to a different class after just one session.  The instructor will tailor instruction to your child’s present skill level, and also work skills that are a bit more challenging: those that your child has not yet demonstrated proficiency.  When it is time for your child to move to a more challenging class, your child’s instructor will help guide you.  Feel free to ask!

Q.  Where can I buy leotards?

A. Some people have difficulty purchasing leotards at local retailers.  We have an extensive collection of used leotards in all sizes and styles in the gymnastics office for $10.  The nearest “leotard stores” are Dancewear House in Hallowell, and Finer Pointes in Portland.   Many companies sell them online as well.

Q.  What about the team?

A. Participation on team is by invitation only, when a required skill level has been achieved.  Please read the team handbook, available online, for a glimpse into what team entails.

Q.  What if I still have questions?

A. Please see a gymnastics instructor.  He or she will be happy to answer your questions.
