What is America On the Move Week at the YMCA?
America On the Move Week at the YMCA is an exciting opportunity to promote YMCA Activate America as well as showcase the YMCA as a valuable community resource in helping people lead a healthier lifestyle.
The America On the Move program is designed to motivate people to increase the number of steps they take throughout the day. In addition to walking, America On the Move has tools that allow the conversion of other activities like swimming, biking, tennis and aerobic dancing into the equivalent number of steps. Therefore our goals at the YMCA are:
Goals:
- Track the number of people that participate in America On the Move at the YMCA
- Track the number of steps these individuals take in their activities
Results:
During last year’s America On the Move Week over 1,100 YMCA’s collectively inspired 850,000 people to embrace the small steps movement and take the equivalent of 9.3 billion steps – that’s like circling the earth 187 times; or completing 177,481 marathons. This year’s goal is 10 Billion Steps!
Locally the Bath Area Family YMCA inspired 832 participants to increase their daily movement the equivalent of over 9 million steps!
During the month of September, America On the Move’s website (www.americaonthemove.org) will present a new YMCA-themed virtual trail that will focus on the history of health and well-being.
Individuals – families – groups can join the AOM campaign by either:
- stopping by the Bath Area Family YMCA and picking up your tracking form and calendar after Sept. 1st.
or by registering on the homepage of www.bathymca.org after Sept. 1st. When America on the Move Week starts on September 22nd you’ll be able to input your steps daily and track your success!
